Bridge To Kyoto
Located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, Bridge To is a space for practitioners involved in architecture, urban development, design, art, and beyond. They offer residencies for artists from Japan and abroad, a shared atelier, an event space, and a private library of books and items related to architecture, urban planning, and city planning. They also plan, manage, and host cultural and artistic projects, organize and curate exhibitions, and more. Their two active locations are Bridge Studio and Bridge Office.
Originally used as a pediatric hospital, Bridge Studio was left vacant for 23 years. In February 2024, it is reborn as the residency's largest and newest location. There are a total of eight rooms in use across two floors, including a former examination room, waiting room, and living space. The building itself has a unique architectural blend of half Western and half Japanese; it is being carefully renovated to preserve its character and history.
Bridge Studio welcomes artists, designers, researchers, and writers who wish to stay and work in Kyoto. Their basic policy is to offer medium-to-long-term stays ranging from a few weeks up to three months:
- Less than two weeks RESEARCH RESIDENCY: Includes: room + studio use + 1 day presentation/event
- 1 month LONG FULL RESIDENCY: Includes: room + studio use + 3 day exhibition in the gallery
If you wish to stay longer than one month, send them an inquiry.
At least one event, workshop, public talk or exhibition that is open to the public is required to be organized by the applicant.
There is a office space/living space that is open to Residency fellows, which can turn into an event / workshop /exhibition space.
- A room for living and working in a traditional Japanese style house (furnished, with wifi)
- Access to common spaces (kitchen, terrace, garden, bathroom, and living room)
Duos are welcome. The residency is not suitable for children.
Only a 5-minute walk away from the Silver Temple (Ginkakuji) & the Philosopher’s Path, one of the most popular icons of Kyoto. Good connections with Tokyo and other parts of Japan if residents are interested in spending some time aside from Kyoto.
