Application guidelines:

Artists apply through an open call published annually. Applications are submitted online and should include a portfolio and CV. Selection is made by the Artistic Commissioner based on artistic quality and relevance to the residency context.

Description

The International Ceramic Sculptural Symposium in Bolesławiec is a long-running artist-in-residence programme with over sixty years of history.

The programme takes place within active ceramic factories, offering artists a unique opportunity to work in a production environment rather than a traditional studio. Participants collaborate with technicians and craftspeople, engaging directly with materials, technologies, and processes rooted in the local ceramic tradition.

The residency is hosted across three manufactories in Bolesławiec and provides access to kilns, materials, and technical facilities. It creates a dynamic exchange between contemporary artistic practice and industrial production. The programme is open to international artists working in ceramics, sculpture, and interdisciplinary practices. It emphasizes experimentation, material research, and cross-cultural exchange. Each edition concludes with an exhibition and a bilingual catalogue, and is connected to the Bolesławiec Ceramics Festival.

Outcome

Each residency results in the production of new ceramic works developed within the industrial context of Bolesławiec manufactories.
Selected works are presented in a post-residency exhibition during the Bolesławiec Ceramics Festival and included in a bilingual catalogue.
Participants also engage in public presentations, knowledge exchange, and collaborative activities with other artists and local communities.

Accommodation Information

Accommodation is provided by the organiser in a boarding facility located at the Congregation of the Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ (St. Maria De Mattias Boarding House), ul. Zgorzelecka 27, 59-700 Bolesławiec.
Participants are accommodated in single rooms during the residency.
It is possible to stay with a partner or family upon prior arrangement; however, any additional costs must be covered by the participant. In such cases, accommodation is organised separately from the main group of residents.

Studio Information

Artists work within active ceramic factories, using production spaces adapted for artistic work. Studios are integrated into the industrial environment and include access to mould-making, casting, glazing, and finishing areas.

Workspaces are shared and require coordination with factory production schedules.

Technical Information

Residents have access to:
– ceramic masses (stoneware, fireclay – both casting and plastic)
– gas and electric kilns (760–1250°C)
– mould-making facilities
– basic glazing materials and pigments (limited selection)
– technical support from experienced factory staff

Availability depends on the production capacity of each factory.
