There are three pathways to participate in the BASIS Residency Program:
1. Open Residency: Applicants secure their own funding (via grants, scholarships, institutions, or personal resources). BASIS provides support with invitation letters and guidance on funding strategies. Additionally, there is the possibility for tailormade curation of the residents’ stay, by proposition of specific program content.
2. Semi-Funded Residency with Project Proposal: Applicants may propose a project that includes partial support from external partners, co-funding institutions, or sponsors. BASIS offers active collaboration and guidance during the grant writing and application process, and co-signs proposals when relevant.
3. Content Based Residencies via BASIS Open Call: Once per year, BASIS issues a themed open call with full or partial funding available (covering accommodation, workspace, and production support). These calls are competitive and juried by internal and external partners. Applicants should monitor BASIS’ website and newsletter for announcements.

Description

BASIS Vinschgau Venosta is a cross-sector platform for a peripheral rural catchment area, located in a place steeped in history. The former supply building Palazzina Servizi is part of the Caserma Druso barracks and is located in Silandro in Val Venosta, in the west of South Tyrol, in the north of Italy. The central location of the market town in the valley favors the establishment of the integrative development project BASIS Vinschgau Venosta as a Vinschgau service and training location. The aim is to reactivate initiative, enthusiasm and responsibility among the population and to enable, shape and perpetuate cross-sectoral development processes.

The BASIS Residency Program is a long-form, transdisciplinary residency based in South Tyrol’s unique cultural and ecological context. Designed for artists, scientists, technologists, designers, researchers, and hybrid practitioners, the program provides time, space and community for in-depth research, production and collaboration.

While the BASIS Residency Program is interdisciplinary and open in scope, the following focus areas reflect key research and cultural threads grounded in local collaborations, regional infrastructure, and existing initiatives. Residents may use these as anchors, provocations, or starting points for their own proposals:
A. Regeneration of Abandoned Spaces. Exploring the afterlives of architecture, infrastructure, and memory through site-specific interventions and spatial research.
B. Creative Hubs & Innovation Networks. Investigating how decentralised spaces can act as nodes of innovation, production, and belonging in under-networked regions. Hereby highlighting the focus and importance on the role of CCIs, Hybrid spaces and third spaces.
C. Digital & Media Production. Using media—from film and sound to code and podcasting—as tools for critical reflection, experimentation, and inclusive storytelling.
D. Culinary Residency. Positioning food as a medium for cultural exchange, ecological understanding, and artistic investigation.
E. Environmental Research / Wirtschaft & Forschung. Investigating ecological change, land use, and multispecies cohabitation through both scientific and artistic methodologies.

Outcome

Residents manage their own schedules but are integrated into BASIS’ collaborative residency framework. During and after the residency, fellows are encouraged to engage with the local context through research and collaboration, participate in community events (weekly dinners, open studios, quarterly exhibition), self-publish documentation of their research or outcomes, contributing to BASIS’ archive, and host at least 1-3 proposed public-facing events or workshops. Residents have access to BASIS’ full suite of production and presentation spaces.
