Artist guests pay a fee based on a weekly or monthly rate;
For one studio/sleeping loft and sharing kitchen bathroom and lounge, the fee is CAN $600 per month, and for stays of less than one month, CAN $600 per week;
For the whole building, two studio spaces and two sleeping lofts and exclusive use of the kitchen bathroom and lounge, the fee is CAN $1200 per month or CAN $1200 per week for stays of less than one month.
Artist guests will need a vehicle for this residency.

Application guidelines:

Artist guests are received on a first come first serve basis. They may apply via email and should include a brief bio and statement of purpose. Artist guests are welcome year-round but most prefer to come when the weather is better, April to December. Longer stays are encouraged, and a vehicle is required to get around.

Description

Bareneedstudios is a fee-based, non-juried, independent and self-directed artist residency program. The residency is located in a re-purposed general store along the shore of Conception Bay in Newfoundland, Canada. This is an extreme marine climate. The nearest town is Bay Roberts, a 5 minute drive away. The nearest airport is YYT, St. John's International Airport. The nearest ferry is either Argentia (60 minutes away) or Port aux Basques (8 hours away). Artist guests are received on a first-come first serve basis. In the repurposed general store there are two artist studios/sleeping lofts with a shared kitchen, full bath, lounge, and wifi.

The program is self-directed, non-juried, and independent of arts organizations and galleries. Mediums include visual arts, writing, performance, photography, film, sound, sculpture, dance. There is a well and septic system and so materiel must be ecologically disposable. Long stays are encouraged, eg, month(s) so that there is time for knowledge and cultural exchange. The Proprietor is very willing to facilitate the artist's introduction to the various local arts communities.

Outcome

Artists will have an enriched experience of the local Newfoundland culture and marine ecology. The residency can be project driven with or without facilitation, or it can be a personal, reflective, and creative opportunity for renewal and growth.

Accommodation Information

There are two open concept studio spaces separated by the shared common full kitchen, lounge and bathroom. Above each studio is a sleeping loft, each with a queen bed. One wall separates the sleeping lofts but each also is partially open to the studios and common areas below. Guests may reserve the whole building, comprising two studio spaces and sleeping lofts; or just one studio space/sleeping loft with the understanding that another artist would be using the other studio/sleeping loft. Family and pets are welcome within reason and while respecting the personal space of the other artist guest when one studio/sleeping space is selected. There is wifi.

Studio Information

Each studio has a desk, easels, wash-up area, and large windows looking out over the ocean seascape. There is access to two messy work areas with power. The kitchen is small but has a full-sized stove, sink and refrigerator and eating area. Guests are expected to do their own food shopping and preparing. There are linens, bedding and towels provided. Guests are expected to do their own laundry.
