Description

Created in 2011 in Clermont-Ferrand, Artistes en résidence (A·R) is a non-profit organization that supports contemporary creation by organizing residencies for artists and researchers in the field of contemporary art. They support the international mobility of artists and the circulation of ideas and skills through the development of a vast network of local, national, and international partners.

At A·R, residencies are considered as a time entirely dedicated to research and experimentation with no obligation to produce. The goal is to provide artists with the necessary time for qualitative and in-depth research, to promote a true immersion in the residency context, and to allow for trial and error as well as critical questioning necessary for the development of artistic practices.

Inaugurated in 2020, the 100-day residency program aims at welcoming artists and researchers of all ages and nationalities to Clermont-Ferrand for a period of 100 days. Selected artists are free to organize their residency as suited to their availability, whether it be over 100 consecutive days or dispersed over the course of one year. This flexibility takes into consideration the varied realities of artists and allows time for reflection, research, and experimentation compatible with the artists’ professional and private obligations.

Outcome

The artists may, if they wish, organize or take part in a public event during which they can present their work or research, regardless of the space where the said work or research was created. There is no obligation to present their work publicly if artists do not wish to do so.

Studio Information

The studio is a large 150 m2 space, which can be adjusted owing to its modular walls. It is located at La Diode, a multidisciplinary cultural centre, which A·R shares with Les Ateliers, the Pôle Chorégraphique La Diode, the Auvergne Regional Choir, Maison des jeux and Videoformes. A·R and Les Ateliers share an exhibition space, which allows artists to test installation of works, take pictures, and organize public events to share their research.
Artists also have access to technical equipment shared between A·R and Les Ateliers (wood workshop, portable power tools, ceramic kiln, MIG welding station, computer room with A3 printer/scanner, etc.).
The studio and technical equipment are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Accommodation Information

Provided by the Clermont-Ferrand City Council and located close to the city centre, the 100 m2 apartment comprises three bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen and two bathrooms, and has access to a 200 m2 garden. It is the place where residents live, and is also a hub of encounters between contemporary art professionals, since A·R makes vacant rooms in the apartment available to its local partners with a view to pooling resources.
Resident artists have the possibility to bring their partner and/or family to stay with them at the residency. Please contact the team for more detailed terms and conditions.
The apartment, located on the third floor of a building without an elevator, is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. Appropriate solutions can be found on a case-by-case basis. Those concerned are invited to contact A·R to discuss things together.
