Akademie Schloss Solitude is an international Artist-in-Residence Program and has supported approximately 1,700 young artists from more than 120 countries since opening its doors in 1990. It creates a close-knit, global and trans-disciplinary network of Solitude alumni that expands from year to year.
Current Call:
Akademie Schloss Solitude is happy to announce the start of the call for applications for its international and trans-disciplinary artist-in-residence-program. The call for approximately 65 residency fellowships from 2024 to 2026, of six to twelve months in duration, runs from September 1 to November 30, 2023.
International artists are invited to apply from the following spheres of practice: VISUAL (visual arts and media), AURAL & PHYSICAL (music and performing arts), DIGITAL (digital art, gaming, digital journalism, digital publishing), SPATIAL (architecture and design), TEXTUAL (literature and language), SOCIETAL (education, mediation, theory), SCIENTIFIC (humanities, social, natural and economic sciences.
In favor of supporting the constantly changing nature of digital online work, and promoting experimental approaches, they do not prescribe the format in which applicants choose to present their work. Yet, the Digital Solitude program provides web space for each web resident and hosts and distributes their web-based projects within a given frame. In addition, the program works with a web designer/UX designer and programmer who can assist in implementing the project. In addition to presenting and sharing projects online, the program is currently working on offline formats related to the call. This could be a listening session, a panel, an exhibition, or a curated program in fall 2023, to be defined more precisely with the web residents’ working group. They encourage the applicants to consider the accessibility of the users, who may range in age, race, gender, economic class, and ability.
The studios are usually only equipped for one person due to their size and the buildings’ historic design. The Akademie does its best to accommodate families/partners. Please note that this is not always possible in the case of families/partners from abroad, because entry and residence regulations must be observed. The fellowship grant allows to cover the standard living costs for one person in Stuttgart. Fellows may use the Akademie’s carpentry and metal workshops under the supervision of the resident managers. They also have access to a digital film editing studio, a VR studio, a printing and copying room, two small libraries and several computer workstations.
The Akademie maintains 42 living/working studios, and three guest studios.
The Academy Schloss Solitude is located on the grounds of a baroque castle in the outskirts of Stuttgart with access to public transport.
