Description
Aira Dance Company AB is a company offering artist residency programs especially for dancers in Sápmi, home for the indigenous people in the north of Norway, Sweden, Finland and part of Russia. As one of the most friendly people on earth according to a recent scientific research, they are welcoming artists from all over the world and from different kinds of art. They have been the company for three years where the dance company, Invisible People Contemporary Dance Company was offering their shows. A Sami owned and led organization with a strong connection to nature, love and the Sami culture.
They are hosting many different opportunities for artistic residencies, but the main area is contemporary dance. In the building they have a dance studio, an amphi theatre for 130 people, a music studio, conference room, office and relaxing areas. The house is situated on a peninsula in the small lule river, with a forest surrounding it. The house is built to follow the shape of the nature around it and got a reward for it´s design in -92. The residencies has the option of a lot of technical equipment and also has the opportunity to try out equipment while producing a show. If the residency ends with a completed show they can also offer a tour in the nearby region for selected artists, as well as a premiere in their cultural centre. The livestream equipment on site also makes it easy for a visiting artist to record their work and/or live stream it if wanted.
Outcome
As a place to be free in the creation and development they are open to all kinds of outcome, but they do value if there is something the artist gives back to the community in the villages and cities nearby. It could be a complete show, a work in progress, a workshop, an artistic talk etc. The residency offers a space for artists to feel safe and free to create, to make misstakes and try again, to find new friends and artists to connect to or work together with.
Accommodation Information
There is a small hotel within walking distance and during 2024 the organsiers are looking to buy some nearby residential buildings to host artists in a home-like environment.
Studio Information
The main dance studio has a huge window area in the ceiling on one side that also is higher. This is as far as you come from a blackbox square type of place, as you see in one of the included pictures. In one end of the studio we have an open fire place and its possible to have a morning worm-up or a yoga with a fire in the background. The floor is an elastic, dance floor with a dance carpet on top, especially loved if you are into floor work. The studio is also rigged for circus, so you have multiple places to hang your silk or something else from the ceiling and also a place for slack-line in the amphi theatre.
Technical Information
They have a sound and light system installed and a whole set of extra lights etc, if you want to try out some new ideas before buying them. The livestream equipment can easily be used to record your production from multiple angles without any technician present. They also have a fully equipped music studio and a sewing studio that can be part of the residency if needed.
