AiR zusa
Zusa is an international organization dedicated to empowering cultural and civil society actors who are committed to transforming their social and cultural environments. Their mission centers on fostering collaboration as a powerful tool for systemic change. Through your efforts, you cultivate spaces that encourage process, creativity, and experimentation. Based in Berlin, your work spans Europe, North Africa, West Asia, and beyond. Their core values embrace a do-it-together philosophy, and you collaborate with partners to design and implement programs that reflect your commitment to collective action and shared principles.
AiR Zusa aims to provide a safer space for artists and cultural professionals who have experienced psychological distress after living in war-torn countries. By offering a supportive, interdisciplinary environment, its goal is to help them build resilience and networks, with a particular focus on those affected by the conflict in Ukraine over the past two years.
While some residencies emphasize the final result, AiR Zusa acknowledges that creativity also involves periods of unproductivity or taking breaks, especially when external factors cause emotional blockages. Free from repression, economic stress, and other pressures, the residency encourages cultural workers to rest and focus their energy in the direction they need, without any pressure, redefining the concept of productivity and replenishing inner resources.
The residency programme is organised in a 160 sqm fully equipped apartment in Berlin- Lichtenberg with 2 large shared spaces (one for working and one kitchen/dining/living space), 4 private bedrooms, a bathroom, 2 balconies and plenty of calming green areas around.
AiR Zusa is not a product-oriented residency program; its aim is to provide time and resources to improve the mental health and well-being of cultural professionals living under pressure in their home countries. The residency is tailored to residents’ personal needs, offering activities such as external mental health and coaching support, local and international networking, exploration of the local cultural scene, research support, and methods for dealing with fear and trauma. It helps participants rebuild resilience after experiencing war.
