The ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe is a unique cultural institution worldwide, because it is a place that expands the original tasks of the museum. It is a house of all media and genres, a house of both spatial arts such as painting, photography and sculpture and time-based arts such as film, video, media art, music, dance, theater and performance. The ZKM was founded in 1989 with the mission of continuing the classical arts into the digital age. This is why it is sometimes called the »electronic or digital Bauhaus« – an expression that is traced back to the founding director Heinrich Klotz.
Since the founding of the ZKM in 1989, there have been over 600 guest artists and scientists. For over twenty-five years, artistic works (concerts, operas, performances, interactive installations, films, and computer games, etc.) and scientific works (essays, books, symposia, and exhibitions), have been produced here and technical innovations made in the fields of software and hardware. The program aims to support all genres of artworks that involve electronic media. At the same time, it promotes scientific research that critically examines electronic arts, media technology, and their theory and history, and the changes in culture, everyday life, and politics in the face of technological transformation. The numerous projects arise in collaboration with festivals, museums, universities, and businesses throughout the world.
The ZKM is a place of research and production - both artists and scientists are given the opportunity to realize works and research ideas, and are provided with support at all levels – technically, organizationally, and financially.
Within the framework of production scholarships and in cooperation with international partner institutions, several residencies can be advertised each year on various topics, primarily in the field of acoustics, visual media or software development. The Hertz-Lab has several studios and an extended infrastructure available for artistic production. Some calls are recurrent, such as the call for production scholarships in the context of the Giga-Hertz Award or the Joint ZKM | IRCAM Residency, other residencies are developed project-related and thus vary in terms of duration, framework concept and topic.
The Hertz Lab has an infrastructure created for artistic research and presentation. It is available to artists and scientists at the house as well as guest artists.
