Description

Wassaic Project 2024 Summer Residency Program Open Call

The Wassaic Project accepts 1 – 4 month proposals for their Summer Residency program (June – September) for artists and writers. Artists-in-Residence are selected by a review committee composed of the Wassaic Project Co-Directors, the Director of Artistic Programming, and professionals in the field. They will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large. The Wassaic Project cultivates and supports the community for emerging and professional contemporary artists, writers and other creatives. Housed in historic, landmark buildings, the residency program offers nine artists each month the opportunity to live and work in the heart of a rural community. The Wassaic Project seeks artists working in a diverse range of media who want to produce, explore, challenge, and expand on their current art-making practices, while participating in a community-based arts organization. Please note: because they have had to reschedule multiple Family artists-in-residence this year, they are not accepting applications to the 2024 Summer Family program. Click here for their FAQ.

The Wassaic Project is currently also holding its annual Open Call for our 2024 Summer Exhibition for artists of all mediums, including: 2D work, sculpture, video, new media, site-specific installation, performance, text, poems, essays, publication-specific work, etc. If selected, your work will be showcased alongside a diverse range of pieces and performances in and around historic Wassaic and Maxon Mills, as well as in a printed publication. The Wassaic Project's 2024 Summer Exhibition will be free and open to the public every weekend from May 18 through September 14, 2024. Artists interested in creating a site-specific installation for the 2024 Summer Exhibition are also eligible for an Exhibitions Fellowship to help realize their work. Fellows will be offered a no-fee residency for 1 - 4 weeks in April or May 2024. Artists interested in making site-specific work for the exhibition should still apply regardless of whether or not they are interested in or able to be in residence in April or May. The Wassaic Project cultivates and supports the community for emerging and professional contemporary artists, writers and other creatives. Housed in historic, landmark buildings, the residency program offers 10 artists each month the opportunity to live and work in the heart of a rural community. The Wassaic Project seeks artists working in a diverse range of media who want to produce, explore, challenge, and expand on their current art-making practices, while participating in a community-based arts organization.

Studio Information

Artists will receive an adaptable raw studio space in the historic livestock barn. Artists receive studios that are roughly 80 to 300 square feet. Artists will have 24 hour access to their studio and accommodations. Artists also have access to workshop facilities as well as the potential for expansion of workshop space and the possibility of working outside. Each studio comes equipped with a table, chair, and limited overhead lighting. In addition, residents have access to the woodshop (year round) and the silkscreen studio (only open during the summer season).

Artist residents are required to bring all of their own art supplies and linens. The kitchens and houses are fully furnished. Each studio is provided with a table and a chair. Local artists who do not need living accommodations are encouraged to apply for studio-only residencies.

Artists will have complete creative control over their installation, as long as they keep their work PG-13. They want artists who are excited to participate and get weird, as well as artists who are self-directed and independent with their projects and vision.

Accommodation Information

Wassaic Project offers housing in one of our residency houses for 1 – 3 weeks, private studio space in Maxon Mills, additional studio space in Luther Barn, and full access to our wood shop and print shop.

Location

Farm community in upstate NY. The studios are within easy walking distance of all residency housing. Residents are encouraged to bring a car and/or bike if they have one, but if they don’t, NYC is easily accessible by Metro North ($30 round trip) and staff members make two weekly trips to the grocery store for supplies.
