Lakkos Artists Residency
The 'Lakkos Artists Residency' runs in combination with an urban regeneration project called, 'The Lakkos Project'. It is a community based project that works alongside the Municipality of Heraklion to improve the Lakkos area. The group has so far brought street art, music/ film festivals, restoration of old house facades, and performance art to the area. In summer the residency will screen short and long films on the main roof terrace. The project is not for profit and relies heavily on donations and volunteers.
The residency is designed to bring more creative people to Crete, with a focus on visual arts and writing. The artists will have the opportunity to experience local life in a fascinating area with a long history. The house is slowly being restored when there is nobody staying. The residency is run by an Australian visual artist. Each residency is 'tailor made' to what individuals require.
Courses in Greek cooking, painting and drawing and even the Greek language can be arranged.
There are a couple of city beaches within walking distance. There is no obligation to put on a presentation at the end of an artist’s stay but if desired we often have one-night-only shows.
Bedrooms have desks and natural light. They are currently for some studio space in the area to share. At the moment the residency is not good for people needing a large space to make work. They have the possibility to put on larger exhibitions or music/dance performances at an events space around the corner for one night only events.
The artist’s part of the house has one double and one single bedroom, both share a kitchen and bathroom. It has free Wi-Fi, washing machine, air-conditioning.
There is an art materials shop a short walk away.
