The rate is twenty Euros per day and does not include meals, sheets, towels, linens, or use of telephone, printer, fax machine or photocopier. Residence can, in certain situations, also be offered free of charge to cultural figures with the specific approval of the authorities of the institution.

Residents are asked to pay thirty Euros extra for the contribution to general maintenance expenses and pay a deposit of 100 Euros.
Application guidelines:

Applications for residency at the Casa are examined by a committee made up of professional translators and must receive final approval from the Institution. In order to be considered for a residency, foreign translators:

  • must possess the appropriate professional and legal credentials;
  • must have already published at least two translations (either novels, essays, poetry or plays) from the Italian language;
  • must have signed a contract for the translation of the work in question.
Translators who would like to apply for residency must send:
  • a short CV that includes a list of publications;
  • a copy of the contract for the translation of the work in question;
  • a completed application form;
  • optional: letters of reference
The application should also include the vital statistics of the applicant, how the applicant will choose to pay for their expenses, and the duration of the stay.
The application for residency must be presented to the Director of the Libraries of Rome well in advance.

The Casa delle Traduzioni in Rome was founded in response to an ever-growing interest in the role and task of the translator. The Casa delle Traduzioni is part of Biblioteche di Roma, the local government institution which runs the city library system. The Casa delle Traduzioni mission is to highlight the work of the translator and to promote the Italian language and literature throughout the world.

The space includes a research library for translators as well as accommodation. The Casa delle Traduzioni envisions itself as a centre for research, a place where translators from any country in the world can meet up and exchange ideas, and a unique, specialized library.

The Residence at the Casa delle Traduzioni is a non-profit, non-hotel accommodation. The Residence is designed to host foreign translators working on translations of Italian writers. Preference is given to literary translators. The Casa delle Traduzioni hosts foreign translators from any country as long as they have the necessary professional credentials. Residence depends on availability, as well as on the quality and duration of the project proposed.

Outcome

Residents are asked to lead a seminar or give a lecture during their stay.

Accommodation Information

The Casa delle Traduzioni offers self-catering accommodation. Guest resident translators have unlimited use of the library, the lodging area and the kitchen.
