Berwick-upon-Tweed is a fascinating and inspiring place for artists to live and work and for the past 8 years they have delivered an artist residency programme in the town with a range of partners. They work in partnership with Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival to create opportunities for film and moving image artists to develop their practice with the support of both organisations and premiere work during the annual festival in the town.
They have an ongoing partnership with the Centre for Rural Economy (CRE) at Newcastle University which provides the opportunity for an artist working in any art-form to explore and respond to current rural issues and the Institute for Creative Arts Practice, which promotes and supports creative arts practice across the University. The partnership provides the opportunity for the exchange and sharing of knowledge between the artist and researchers at CRE to inform critical responses to the rural, which has an increasing profile within contemporary art debates.
The work will be premiered at Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. Alongside the production of new work by the artists, the residency also results in the publication of academic papers by Newcastle University. For example, the paper ‘Researching Rural Housing: With an Artist in Residence’ explores how Sander Van Raemdonck’s artistic practice responded to the highly contentious topic of housing development in rural England and was able to provide a space for engagement between the local community, planners and academics. The full paper can be read here.
