Description

[A]Space, in partnership with Artists at Risk and Quinta das Relvas, is offering a four-week artistic residency in Portugal to four Ukrainian women artists from 1 to 28 February 2023, followed by an exhibition in Lisbon at [A]Space gallery.

[A]SPACE is located in a building that is currently being restored to its original glory, leaving all its historic value intact. No one knows how long this will take, as the building hides many secrets, one being the oldest Moorish defense wall in Lisbon from the 800s, which forms part of the building’s backbone today. During this time, [A]SPACE, a multidisciplinary art-led environment, will reign.

[A]SPACE is a home for new prodigies, where the work of artists with high levels of originality and skill is exhibited. Here, the focus is on talent, no matter the person’s age, ethnicity, background or preferences. What unites the art shown at [A]SPACE, is that it is produced in Portugal.

[A]SPACE, while run commercially, has a not-for-profit agenda. The owner of the building, Travessa Fresca, is providing the space free of charge for exhibits and encounters, sharing the company’s vision of maintaining a dynamic inner-city life. For exhibiting artists, this means that they retain the lion’s share of revenue generated by sales of their work themselves. This is contrary to the conditions offered to new talent by established galleries – if, in fact, they take the risk of exhibiting new talent at all.

[A]SPACE is organizing an arts residency project in Portugal during February 2023 to host Ukrainian women artists and provide them with a safe place in the face of the ongoing war. This will be followed by an exhibition in Lisbon.

Outcome

The residency will be followed by an exhibition at [A]Space gallery in Lisbon.

Location

The organisation is located in an untouched corner of Lisbon's Alfama, in a building that survived the 1755 earthquake.

For the 2023 residency hosting four Ukrainian female artists, [A]SPACE is partnering with Quinta das Relvas, a non-profit organisation based in an 18th-century eco-farm in the village of Branca (Albergaria-a-Velha Council), Portugal. The farm has a rich natural and historic heritage where several fauna and flora live peacefully together. Four artists from Ukraine are invited to stay in the eco-houses and use the studios and outdoor spaces, from 1 to 28 February 2023.
