The residence arranges excursions and if the weather permits, boat trips for the artists to local historical, cultural and natural sites in the area.
The artist needs to cover the travel and living expenses. There is an accommodation fee 10 €/day/person.
Please send a freely formulated application, work plan + CV by the end of January for the time period April - March. The residence is open all year round. Please state the preferred duration of your stay. You can also of course inquire about possible free periods.

The Åland Archipelago Guest Artist Residence in Kökar was created in 1997, for an international artist exchange project with Ireland and Catalonia. The residence offers artists who want to find inspiration from the nature an opportunity to develop their work. The basic idea behind the creation of this residence is to experience a new surrounding for creative work. The residence also wishes to improve artist´s ability to pay attention to constructed natural environment and, eventually, to find new ways for interaction between artists, society and environment.
The center is welcoming artists in visual arts, literature, performing arts, design, research, crafts, art journalism, architecture, pottery, media art, photography, sound art. There´s a possibility to use a ceramic studio connected to the nearby local museum, where it is possible to make ceramics from the local clay. There is also a smith´s cottage. Local sheep wool is also available if you are interested in, for example, wool felting.
The residency helps to organize different workshops or presentations if wanted.
The residence is located in an old house built in the 1930's. Earlier the house was used as a health center and as the municipality office. The house is located on a rise looking out over the Hellsö bay and is just a few meters from the sea. There are two apartments + two studios:
Several showers and also sauna available. Bed linen and towels are supplied. There´s wifi in the residency. Bicycles are also available and when necessary transportation by taxi.

The residence is located on the island of Kökar in the outer Åland Archipelago, Finland. The residency is on the north side of Kökar in the village Hellsö. The distance from the residence to Karlby village is 7 km (shop, post office). There is no bank automat on the island. The ferry port is 12 km from the residence, the transport will be arranged by the residence.
