Apply for a residency in Kyoto, Japan

Exchange program between AiR Van Gogh Huis, Villa Kamogawa powered by Dutch embassy Tokyo

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Japan has been working with the Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto since 2019 to strengthen cultural exchange between this region of Japan and the EU. As part of the collaboration, the embassy and Villa Kamogawa have asked the Vincent van GoghHuis to organize an Open Call for an artist based in the Netherlands to come and work at Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto for three months from May to July 2024.

Villa Kamogawa has offered artist-in-residence programs for German artists since 2011. Starting in 2023, it is also opening up to non-German participants and is cooperating with the Dutch embassy for this purpose. The residence is located in the center of the historic city of Kyoto on the Kamo River, the place along which the city developed and near the imperial palace. In this inspiring location, contacts can be made with the Japanese cultural scene and new artistic projects can be created. Artists respond with contemporary vision to the history of the place, customs and crafts, interacting with the local community.

This residency is offered as part of the International Culture Policy within which Japan is a focus country. The Dutch Embassy implements this policy in Japan with a focus on creating opportunities in Japan for artists from the Netherlands through artist in residencies. This residency at Villa Kamogawa and the Open Call are organized by the Van GoghHuis in Zundert. From all the applications, the Van Gogh AiR curators will compile a shortlist, from which the artistic director of Villa Kamogawa will choose the artist who can go to Japan on a fellowship from May through July 2024.

The residency includes an allowance for a return Japan-Netherlands plane ticket (up to max €1,500), accommodation at Villa Kamogawa and an artist fee of €2,300 per month. Artists can apply by sending a short motivation (max 1 A4) and portfolio to: [email protected]

Deadline application: 14 april 2024
Residency: May t/m July 2024
