artAmari Residency
The aim of the residency is for the artists to get to know the nature, architecture, traditions and customs of the Amari region, its history as well as contemporary everyday life, in order to be inspired by it and take their practice further through this experience. At the same time, we aspire for the locals to acquaint themselves with contemporary art practices and ideas, through their contact with the artists. The area is quite isolated but abundant with cultural and environmental stimuli. It is perfect for artists that seek the focus and concentration to enrich and develop their practice. Along these lines, there is no requirement for final works, but rather for research material.
The residency is being relaunched in the summer of 2023 after initially running between 2013-2017 under different guidelines. The aim of bridging the heart of Crete with contemporary art, though, has remained the same and the material of past residencies on the website gives a very clear understanding of the area and the ways artists work there.
Final works are not necessarily required. Research and generally cultural exchange between the artists and local people and culture are our focus.
The accommodation offers a small office/work area as well as a large veranda that can be used as a studio. Artists that apply should be able to work outdoors but at the same time, the residency is very flexible as to finding solutions. Most past residents made in situ installations or photography or small-scale drawings. In case a large studio is absolutely required the applicant should clearly state this in the application.
The top floor of the two-storey traditional, renovated house, with a large bedroom, bathroom, office/work area, and large veranda exclusively used by the resident artist. Shared kitchen and dining area on the ground floor (what is called 1st floor in the US).
