Rewilding Cultures Residency

The emphasis of the Rewilding Cultures residency is to support the repositioning of the wild within art practices connecting to science and technology

Rewilding Cultures is a Creative Europe collaboration project aiming to reposition the wild within the field of art practices connecting to science and technology. As the European cultural sector has been and still is affected by multiple subsequent and coincident crises (incl. COVID-19, war-induced inflation, and migration) we need to rewild on terms fit for the present and future.

This open call is for a Rewilding Cultures residency at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station in Finland. The organisers offer a fully funded, two-week-long residency for winter 2023 – spring 2024. Artists and artist groups in all stages of their careers are welcome to apply.

The emphasis of the Rewilding Cultures residency is to support the repositioning of the wild within art practices connecting to science and technology. The organisers are looking for initiatives, projects, and individuals who aim to inspire, entertain, question, and otherwise relate to the ways in which we can enhance sustainability, inclusivity, and accessibility in the field of art and culture. You can apply with an existing project or with a new idea.

The residency takes place in the facilities of the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki. The Biological Station offers residents the same possibilities and infrastructure as its scientists and staff: a combined living and working environment, an internet connection, a sauna, access to scientific equipment, laboratory facilities, the library, and a seminar room, as well as the usage of field equipment. A dedicated mentor in Kilpisjärvi will familiarise residents with the local environment and customs.

The selected artist will receive an artist fee of 1000 euros (paid in two installments; before and during the residency) and a subsistence of 420 euros, as well as material costs up to 500 euros and travel costs.

Deadline: 2 June 2023
