Electrofringe Festival

Electrofringe is a five-day festival of electronic arts and culture, committed to fostering creative and innovative use and re-use of technology and electronic artforms, while focusing on artistic development and skills exchange. The festival is now calling for proposals for the 2009 edition. Artists, sound artists, performers, media makers, digital filmmakers, researchers, cross-artform practitioners, curators, producers, writers, experimenters, are invited to apply.

Fabrica Interactive now welcomes applications from young artists and designers to join Fabrica for a one year residency. You must be able to conceive, design, prototype and build engaging and innovative experiences. You will work with a multidisciplinary and multinational team of designers in Fabrica's research centre in Treviso, Italy.

They offer bursaries to successful applicants. The bursary includes travel to Fabrica, as well as accommodation, living expenses and a small grant.

"...During my 11 days residency at Steim I did a working prototype of the second incarnation of my speakingObject (no better title still). it's basically a vocal synthesizer controlled by two buttons and a three axis accelerometer. it works without a computer. the two wires are just power and sound out. the finished object will work on batteries and include an amp plus speaker so there will be no wires at all. it's basically software for a parallax propeller microcontroller that polls the accelerometer and maps the data into parameters for the vocal tract synthesis..."

Steim, Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, based in Amsterdam, is an independent live electronic music centre exclusively dedicated to the performing arts. Steim invites performers, musicians and visual artists for residencies and provides them with an artistic environment and technical facilities, through which concepts can be given a concrete form.

Eyebeam's Artist in Residence (AIR) Program is a multidisciplinary initiative that supports the development, creation and presentation of outstanding new works of art made with digital tools. Residencies give artists an opportunity to engage in an extended exploration of emerging technologies, inventing or refining technology relevant to future projects.


The STRP Festival is one of the largest art & technology festivals in Europe and the mix of music, art & technology makes it unique. The focus during the opening weekend in 2009 is on impact and experience, while the second part will concentrate on delving deeper, amazement and quieting down.

The AIL- program aims act as a go-between, they offer Swiss laboratories as a place of liaison between artists and scientists in order to create new levels of creativity, innovation and communication. Through their artist in residence program AIL encourages research and production of new works, material applications, prototypes and conceptual processes.

Artists who are interested to apply for a residency term, are required to submit a full proposal, which includes the specific lab, they wish to attend.
