In praise and remembrance of Margaret Shiu, artist, connector and founder of Bamboo Curtain Studio

With sadness we learned about the recent passing of Margaret Shiu, founder and director of the famed Bamboo Curtain Studio in Taipei, Taiwan.

Margaret, a remarkable woman and an artist herself, was passionate about the arts and dedicated her life supporting Taiwanese and international artists in any way possible. She founded Bamboo Curtain Studio which grew into an international work and meeting place for artists and an important base for the local art community with whom she and her dedicated team initiated, amongst other programs, the beautiful Plum Tree Creek project.

TransArtists worked with Margaret on several international projects, we convened in many international networks and meetings and she introduced us to the Taiwanese residency world. In her charismatic, enthusiastic way and with her great sense of humor she inspired artists, partner organisations, ministers, NGOs to engage in collaborative projects. Connecting people was her second nature.

She was a great inspiration for me, for our team, and I am sure for many, many others. She was a wise woman, highly respected, much loved and so much fun to be with. We miss her and will cherish our memories of her.

Maria Tuerlings, founder of TransArtists and the TransArtists team
