Waaw will provide individual project assistance before and during your stay, including establishing professional contacts in Senegal and French and Wolof language assistance. They also offer space for possible exhibitions or events.

Paid by artist:

The residency fee (including accommodation, workspace, orientation programme, and project assistance) is €600 a month. A non-refundable registration fee of €200, which counts towards the total amount, should be paid to Waaw upon acceptance of the programme.

Application guidelines:

Informal application letter, with a short concrete project plan if relevant. No particular outcome is required, but project-based residencies with relevance to the Senegalese context and the local creative community are given priority. Please contact them by email only.

Description

The aim of the Waaw centre is to promote African and Senegalese culture as well as creative exchanges. Waaw is open to representatives of all artistic and academic disciplines, but especially professionals in visual arts, crafts and design are encouraged to apply.

Exhibition, event, artist talk or workshop possible, but not obligatory.

Studio Information

5 spaces (sized from 12 to 16 m2) are available for work. There is a small library on site, basic woodworking tools, and leatherwork tools.

Accommodation Information

Accommodation is arranged in a building owned by a local family, where 4-5 bedrooms are at organizers' disposal. Accommodation includes bed linen, use of kitchen and wi-fi connection.

Technical Information

Tools and musical instruments can be borrowed or rented outside the centre. Waaw is surrounded by tailors and carpenters with whom you can collaborate.

Location

Waaw is situated in the middle of the colonial town of Saint-Louis, on an island in the river Senegal at a stone's throw from the Atlantic. Local cultural traditions are strong and diverse and includes music, dance and various crafts.
