An Ti Glas
An Ti Glas (The Green House) is a rural retreat residency in Brittany, France. It’s available to artists who need space away from a busy or urban life, who want to sit with nature, or sit with an idea, or try something in complete isolation.
They have a relationship with a performance space in Nantes (2.5 hours away!) so if you would like to show work in person at the end of your residency they can try to arrange a slot for you.
They can offer solo, duo & trio residencies and potentially more if some are wishing to camp. They can also offer some support in learning skills in music, music tech, disability studies, and project development & management, French language and gardening.
Residency scope includes:
Relationships with nature
Field recording / natural soundscape
Organic and self sufficient models
Folk traditions or Celtic traditions (Breton is spoken in this area).
Future of Celtic Identity
Gardening as artistic practice
Plant based practice
Earth Based Digital Practice
Beyond the anthropocene
No waste practices
Bodies in space / bodies in nature
Other ideas which fit the space
They can liaise with a performance space in Nantes for you to show your work, or host it online.
The attic space is set up as an art work space (it can also host a double futon if required). The attic space has good natural light and is painted white so makes a good writing, drawing or painting space. The roof is pitched so movement is restricted towards the edge of the attic space.
The space can be used to workshop or record music, small dance or theatre ideas, painting, drawing, writing, etc. It may not be suitable for all sculpture or installation work due to the small size and a lack of workshop / tools… but do check with them if you have an idea you think might work here.
They are open to outdoor music sculptures, or garden based objects and vernacular buildings.
The house has one large (5m x 8m) room downstairs with a double bed, sofa, wood burner and desk. Furniture can be removed if you need more space to move around or set up. There is a small kitchen and a small bathroom with a shower.
The attic space upstairs is set up as an art work space (it can also host a double futon if required). The attic space has good natural light and is painted white so makes a good writing, drawing or painting space. The roof is pitched so movement is restricted towards the edge of the attic space.
The site is not fully accessible (sorry). There are two steps into the house, two steps down into the kitchen, a small step up into the shower, and a narrow staircase to the attic space. However, we are experienced in disabled work, so if you have access needs please do speak to us about how we might make it work for you. We will try our best to make it happen.
Should you want to commune with nature further we can provide outdoor sleeping arrangements such as a mini yurt, or bell tent. We are also making a fire pit for outdoor relaxing and cooking.
The small house sits in 1000m2 of garden, which is a work in progress, being transformed into an edible forest garden, polytunnel, and allotment space, using organic, no dig and low effort gardening techniques. You are welcome to help with the garden if this is a source of pleasure for you. Depending on the time of year, there may also be produce from the garden for you to use.
There is no wifi, and all internet is routed through a 4G network.
They have a small sound desk and monitor speakers. They can arrange for a projector. There are various musical instruments which you can discuss using.
The nearest village is 7km away, and there is no public transport. We will help you stock up on groceries on the first day of your visit. We can also provide an electric bike, or you may wish to hire a car while you are staying.
The beautiful pink granite coast is 45 minutes car journey away, with many wild camping spots to choose from. There are forest and lake walks, medieval villages and chateaus to explore within a 30 minute (car) radius. We can arrange day trips to various locations at extra cost.
