Galleri Svalbard has workshops which are used by local and visiting artists. The visitors are offered lodging and studios for shorter stay.
Note: Galleri Svalbard has closed its exhibition space in Nybyen. They will open new premises downtown in the fall of 2021.
The residency consists of three double rooms and a shared livingroom / kitchen, two bathrooms and additionally two studios.
Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic under Norweegian jurisdiction. Spitsbergen is the largest of these. Longyearbyen, situated north of the 78th parallel, has about 1.400 inhabitants. The coal mines have long been the economic backbone of Svalbard, but tourism is becoming an important source of income. There are several settlements at Svalbard. Barentsburg and Pyramiden are inhabited by Russians. The average temperature is about -14 C in the winter and +6 C in the summer. Svalbard has perennial frost, which means that only the top layer of soil thaws in the summer. The midnight sun shines from April 20 to August 20, whereas the dark period lasts from the end of October to mid-February.
