Description

The Frans Masereel Centrum is a center for contemporary art, combining an artist-oriented exhibition and production schedule with an international residency programme for artists and critics, often with a specific focus on printed matter-at-large. In recent decades, the Frans Masereel Centrum has become one of the most challenging and inspiring environments for contemporary artists to investigate printed matter in all its aspects, or to embrace it as part of a broader artistic practice. Critics, writers, curators and academics also use their facilities, to conduct theoretical research in the private context of a dynamic arts center.
Every year, an international, intergenerational mix of around 50 artists and critics is selected by an external jury. No prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required.

Studio Information

There are six workshops at Frans Masereel Centrum, all situated in the various buildings on the premises. Besides workshops for intaglio, letterpress printing, lithography and screen printing, there is also a typography workshop (with wood and lead typesetting) and a digital studio with, besides the scanners and printers necessary to prepare various photographic processes, also a laser cutter and riso machine. The use of the lasercutter, risograph and some printers will be charged. The centre also has two dark rooms where photographic prints (screen printing, photoengraving and offset) can be realised. All workshops are equipped with a ventilation system.

The Frans Masereel Centrum programme and workshops are set up so as to allow residents to work independently and to stimulate them to try different techniques. All manuals and printing processes are organised in convenient folders to be consulted in the workshops. If needed, the workshop managers can guide you through the various printing processes. The studio's are open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
