ArtEZ Institute of the Arts
Design in Residence (DIR) program is an initiative by the ArtEZ department Product Design with the aim to bring practice and education together to explore the wide design territories. The DIR program, launched in 2016, invites studio practice into the department and with their team and lecturers they aim to provide a professional workspace for practitioners within the academy setting.
The DIR program allows the students to explore the diverse stages and character of work processes in design and development in new ways. Practitioners are provided with an opportunity to discuss their work with students and tutors, teach on a specific project, and participate in or organise talks, events and/or exhibitions.
This residency includes:
- a private studio space to develop new work
- part-time involvement in students’ design projects
- giving lectures or presentations
- possibilities for exhibition and project development
They seek designers who want to develop a new body of work. They welcome applications from people from a broad/ crossover practice who are independent , hands-on and dare to speculate and experiment through their work and build new relation in the Product Design field.
The residency studio 4x4 meter is placed between rooms where students have classes. It's directly next to the workshops for wood, leather, metal and free work. Students will pass by the space and the office of Product is down the hallway. The resident will be in the heart of the department. The computer and ceramics facilities are in Onderlangs building, on request the resident can also work there and have a table at the ceramics studio.
Product Design Arnhem is based in the Oude Kraan, close to the workshops and labs. The workspaces are used by all departments to facilitate crossovers and explorations between departments and the resident.
ArtEZ Arnhem has facilities for woodworking, metalworking, ceramics, plastics, printmaking, screenprinting, textiles and leather as well as rapid prototyping, scanning and milling workshops. Other facilities include the library, photography and video-editing workshop.
