week 8: Night views

week 8: Night views

I believe the night has something truly special in Seoul. At night the streets look more spacious and the neon lights shine their gloomy colors. The weather is getting warmer, people gather before café?s and tent bars make space for long night drinking. A drive along the Han river is almost romantic, with its many majestic concrete bridges (twenty I counted) that connect the north with south part of the city.

The last two weeks there have been many protests in downtown Seoul against the U.S. beef import. Protesters gather, aiming to march towards the Blue House, the presidential residence. Therefore the streets here ?in the picture, are fully occupied by dark blue uniforms. There have been quite a few clashes so far. Many students are involved in protests, inventing performances, songs, costumes to plead their case.

At Ssamzie Space we are being kept busy. Besides the occasional visits by curators there is an annual presentation coming up next week with power point presentations and talks. And in a few weeks we?ll have a studio presentation to conclude the time of the residency.
