Thami Mnyele nominated for the Amsterdam Art Price

The Thami Mnyele Foundation has been nominated as first artist-in-residency (ever) for the Amsterdam Art Price 2018.

Since 1992 the Thami Mnyele Foundation runs a three month artist-in-residence program in Amsterdam. The program offers African artists the opportunity to concentrate on work, reflection or research, from a studio in the centre of Amsterdam. After 26 years dedicated work, advancing cultural exchange between artists from Africa and The Netherlands, the Thami Mnyele Foundation finds itself in the spotlight being rewarded the nomination of the Amsterdam Art price in the category for best achievement.

According to the jury: We have selected the candidates for their role as pioneers in their respective field, and to raise visibility for what usually goes by unnoticed. All candidates embrace their independence and don't hesitate to challenge commercial tendencies in the arts and in the city. Above all, their work claims urgency and is topical  without loosing sight of larger historical contexts.
