Open call at Frans Masereel Centrum

The applications for residencies in 2019 at the Frans Masereel Centrum are now open for admission! More precisely, the Centre is offering residencies for creating and developing graphic projects, for the study of the graphic medium and for the writing of a critical text on a print related topic. Possible candidates are professional artists, designers, theoreticians, critics and/or researchers. The time period for these residencies will vary between four to six weeks, and they will take place from March until September 2019. The cost for the general and research residency is 350 euro per week, and 175 euro per week for the essay residence. Deadline for submission is 1 October (2018).

  • General residency: During the general residency programma, the artist or designer realizes a print project that matches his or her personal oeuvre. The focus lies on development, creation and production in the atelier. No prior knowledge of the graphic medium is required. During the first two weeks of the residency the artist can chose two printing techniques which will be taught through workshops. These workshops are led by experts in printing techniques. The different choices of printing techniques are: etching, lithography, relief print and silk screen printing. In addition, we also offer a variety of digital techniques. After two weeks of intensive technical introduction, you will have four weeks of residency available to develop and produce your project. Two staff members will be present to assist and help you with any technical questions. Artist meetings are also organized weekly, during which the projects will be discussed collectively. Individual feedback will be given once a week by external artistic mentors.
  • Research residency: This residency for researchers, artists and designers focuses on research of the graphic medium. The wide range of printing techniques available at the Centre provides the opportunity to study technical aspects, innovative processes and graphic visual elements. The infrastructure, time and international network that we offer are ideal for creating a research lab. Knowledge of the medium is required. Artist meetings are also organized weekly, during which the projects will be discussed collectively. Individual feedback will be given once a week by external artistic mentors. At the end of the residence program the results of the research will be shared during an Artist Talk. They will also be published in the PRINT LAB on the Centre’s website.
  • Essay residency: Critics, artists and theoreticians can reside at the Centre to write a critical text on a print related topic. The essay can relate to one or several resident artists, to an exhibition on graphic media or to research about the graphic medium. Both the Masereel Centre’s collection and the library are available for research. Artist meetings are also organized weekly, during which the projects will be discussed collectively. Individual feedback will be given once a week by external artistic mentors.
