Kaus Australis: who owns the city

Artists have always played a crucial role in the cultural dynamics of Rotterdam. The Kaus Australis collective and artist-in-residence program developed a model for DIY studios in 1993 - a striking example of the way in which artists literally make room for art. The exploding real estate market is now putting this place under pressure. Kaus Australis must be closed, and the city seems to have reached a tipping point. What does the current real estate policy mean for Rotterdam as a city for makers?

Kaus Australis posed the question Who owns the city? and organized a symposium last October at their premisis. This is followed up by an exhibition at Tent in Rotterdam about the timeline of the collective, and a program with various guests and informal discussions to map the developments and turning points in the city.
