What did you like about Doklaan?

The feeling that anything you want to achieve you can do it and it is certainly up to you, in a building full of ateliers and people co-working, in the context of the city of Amsterdam with its deep cultural history.

What didn't you like?

Honestly, there is nothing i didn't like. Doklaan is democratic and I figure we didn't find a better system yet.

What did you do/produce?

I met a lot of different people, made friends, put up an exhibit based on photography and hand knitted design where the main piece was a hammock, got involved in other people projects, signed a contract with Kleintje Kunst (http://kleintjekunst.com), traveled to Paris to interview Gyula Kosice for the biographic film about himself directed by Gabriel Fiszman, put up an  installation project based on recycling plastic bags at Magneet Festival, Studied Dutch, made my mother come to Europe for the first time and couldn’t help it; fell in love.

Did the residency help you in your career (or personal life) and if YES, how?

Yes, by making me feel inspired. It is a risk flying to another country without knowing much of the destiny, you need to have some sense of adventure, I am pleased with the people i found and opportunities and challenges along the way. It is enriching to discover how people from other part of the world deal with it all. I am still learning from this period, so yes, the residency was indeed very helpful.

Róbert Batykó - Hungary

August/December 2013

What did you like about Doklaan?

I liked the location of the building (beautiful area, calm but close to the city center). More important that I really liked the community of the dokkers just like the room and the studio. There was a lots of activities around, rehearsals and shows at the Dokzaal, exhibitions and concerts at the café. I enjoyed being a bar tender for the first time of my life. It was a pleasure being a stranger at the Plantagedok.

What didn't you like?

I don’t think that I disliked anything. Honestly the only bad thing was that I had to leave the place after 5 months. What can I say? Open the café every day :)

What did you do/produce?

I created a series of oil paintings and in the end of my residency I made a show at the wonderful Dokzaal. I also made collage works, photography, I was very satisfied with the conditions of the guest studio!

Did the residency help you in your career (or personal life) and if YES, how?

Indeed! Thanks for the show at the Dokzaal I am having further exhibitions in Amsterdam I created a catalogue of what I’ve done during my stay and I presented the work I made at my hometown in Budapest. It was a very productive and wonderful period in my life. Thank you Plantagedok!
