There is no application fee but if selected they will ask for a Spare Change fee (the only fee at SPARE) of $50 which secures your spot and covers a fraction of the things they provide.

Application guidelines

To apply please consider and submit the following for SPARE´s consideration:

  • PORTFOLIO: Please send a pdf portfolio and/or link to your website so that they can see your work.
  • STATEMENT: An artist statement or something similar that describes your general work and conceptual pursuits would be helpful. This does not need to be written specifically for your work at SPARE.
  • PROJECT & INTENTS: Describe your intents and the project you will be working on while staying at SPARE. They do not need an elaborate proposal but do need a general understanding of what you want to do. They encourage informal writing and are most interested in content, concept, and book-form related ideas.

SPARE is open to artists looking to print or make work different from what is in their portfolio and this will in no way hinder your acceptance if you can lay out your ideas clearly. In fact, they are especially interested to work with artists without print or book experience or others who can challenge those conventions.

SPARE

Description

SPARE is a modest short-term artist residency program and resource center for Risograph printing, small-scale publishing, and bookmaking. As a residency program the hosts give residents a small bedroom plus access to their Risograph GR3750 stencil printer and other rudimentary bookmaking tools. They have occasional open hours in which they operate as a book and print shop. The hosts are available for consultation, production jobs, and other requests on a select basis.
You do not need to have print or book experience to apply for residency or print at SPARE. They have a stencil printer and would like to know what you would do with it.

Accommodation Information

SPARE residents are given a private room in the hosts´ apartment and have access to the print room which contains the Risograph and other book related materials. Residents share the apartment with Kyle and Shannon (married), their son, and their little dog.

The SPARE room: The resident bedroom has white walls and is about 90 square feet. It has a south-facing window a small desk and some plants. You’ll get a wardrobe with a hanging rod and hangers and a couple of shelves. The bed is lofted so you’ll have to climb a ladder to get in each night. Clean bedding, pillows, and towels are provided. There is wireless internet access throughout the apartment.

Meals can be shared with the hosts few nights during the week or prepared individually in the fully furnished kitchen.

Technical Information

The Risograph GR3750 stencil printer is the basis of SPARE. Please have a look at the SPARE website for further information.
