Founded by artists, and still run by artists for artists, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture is not a 'retreat.' Rather, it seeks to create the most stimulating environment possible for artistic creation and interaction. Skowhegan is an intensive nine-week summer residency where each year sixty-five visual artists are admitted to produce art in a communal, rural environment of great natural beauty.
Separate from studio Each participant, faculty and staff member is given a studio. All studios are open 24 hours a day throughout the session. Many artists opt to work throughout the night.
Individual rooms in shared house Four large houses and three cottages by the lake accommodate the students. Students usually share a room and no rooms have private baths. Residence is required of all participants for the full nine weeks. Participants furnish their own blankets, sheets and towels.
Skowhegan is set on 300 acres in the heavily forested lake district of Central Maine.
