The Recology San Francisco Artist in Residence Program is an innovative program that inspires and educates people about recycling and resource conservation by providing local artists with access to materials, a work space, and other resources at the Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center. Since 1990, artists have worked in a large, well-equipped studio making art from the things that San Franciscans throw away. 2 artists work for 4 months on site and have an end-of-residency exhibition. The program is not live-in and is only open to people living in the San Francisco, California area.
A public 3-days exhibition, artist talk, and postcards/press.
No accommodations. Artists must live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
2500 sq. ft. studio/shop to be shared with another artist.
The studio is located at the San Francisco Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center (Recology San Francisco), a 44-acre property that includes the trash transfer station (where trash goes before being sent to landfill), the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, the Organics Annex, the Public Disposal and Recycling Area ("The Dump"), and other recycling areas. The facility, which is located west of Highway 101 near Candlestick Park, also is home to a three-acre sculpture garden containing work by former artists-in-residence.
