Application guidelines

The Melbourne iAIR program is generally not available for unsolicited or independent proposals. The majority of residencies are awarded to overseas and Australian artists who have been approached to undertake a residency in Melbourne through a partnership between the School of Art and other cultural organizations.

Independent proposals that are deemed to be of strong significance and pertinent to the aims of the School will be considered.

  • Artists who are interested in putting forth an expression of interest to participate in the iAIR program should develop their project with the support of an RMIT School of Art staff member. This expression of interest should consider the project’s funding and confirm that the staff member has the capacity and availability to host the potential project. The staff member and artist are invited to contact the iAIR Coordinator to discuss the potential project at any stage in this process.
  • School of Art staff who are interested in inviting an artist to participate in the iAIR program should contact the iAIR Coordinator to discuss the potential project.

Selection of all independent iAIR projects will be made by the School’s International Development, and Industry Engagement Committee.

Description

Overseas and Australian artists, curators, writers and academics are regularly invited to undertake research in the RMIT School of Art. School studios and research staff host these individuals with the assistance of iAIR, involving them in the School community, supporting their projects and helping facilitate their stay in Melbourne.

Outcome

Residents pursue their project and share it with the School and Melbourne community through lectures, workshops and tutorials. Visiting artists may also be invited to present research developed during the residency – in the form of a public exhibition, project, conference or publication held in the University or via one of our partners.
