Salmela Art Centre
Salmela Art Centre in Mäntyharju is one of the biggest and most famous art centres in Finland. It’s multicultural program includes art exhibitions, concerts and competitions. The exhibitions concentrate on contemporary Finnish art of a high standards. The exhibitions feature famous Finnish artists as well as new talents. Salmela Art Centre is open only during the summer. Outside the exhibition season Salmela’s exhibition spaces will be given up for the use of 4-8 young artist. This activity was started experimentally already in 1993 and over 150 young art creators have been working in Salmela ever since.
Salmela offers free lodging and atelier space in a peaceful and beautiful surroundings in the Mäntyharju municipality. Salmela’s main building has ateliers and apartments for four artist simultaneously. Ateliers are best suited for painters. Everyone has their own studio and bedroom, the kitchen area is shared.

Mäntyharju is an advanced rural community in Eastern Finland and a border parish of Savo. The boundary of three tribes, the Häme, Savo and Karelia peoples, is located in the municipality area. The current inhabitants of Mäntyharju are mainly of Savo lineage.
Currently Mäntyharju has approximately 6,000 residents. In the summer, the services provided in the centre are in part like those of a town and satisfy the needs of both the inhabitants and visitors. The business centre has several banks, restaurants, an off-licence, health centre and diverse commercial services. Over 4,000 inhabitants live in the centre. Residency is located approximately 3 km from the business centre (no public transportation).
