The Visual Artist Residencies is fully funded. For shorter residencies artists from ASEAN countries can receive funding for their air fare and a living allowance of RM1,000 a month; Australian artists are encouraged to find their own funding, such as through the Asialink Visual Arts Residency Program.

The Choreographer's Residency provides free: self-contained accommodation with kitchen facilities, access to the dance studio and other arts spaces at Rimbun Dahan, networking contacts with the local dance community and limited production assistance for a final showing, determined on a case-by-case basis. Artists from ASEAN nations can receive funding for their air fare and a living allowance of RM1,000 per month. Australian choreographers are encouraged to apply for a Performing Arts Residency from Asialink or support from the Australia Malaysia Institute.

The Residencies at Hotel Penang: the host provides: accommodation, studio space and breakfast at Hotel Penaga for the duration of the stay, living and materials allowance of RM 1,000 per month and air fare (for Southeast Asian artists only).

 

Paid by artist:

For international artists who are NOT from ASEAN countries or Austrialia, should pay RM 4.000 (approx. 1233 USD) a month. The fee includes weekly room cleaning and linen change, and some logistical support like transport for weekly shopping trips for food, airport meet and transfer, free WiFi, inclusion in any events that might be happening at Rimbun Dahan from drinks by the pool to trips to openings or events in KL or the local area. Visas are the responsibility of the artist.

Application guidelines:

Visual Arts residencies and Residencies at Hotel Penaga are for Australian and Southeast Asian artists only.

Choreographers from all over the world are welcome, however preference will be given to South-East and Australian artists.

International artists who are not from Australia and ASEAN countries can apply for Open Residnecies program. Please contact Ms. Angela Hijjas directly.

Set on fourteen acres outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the compound of Rimbun Dahan is a centre for developing traditional and contemporary art forms. It runs a range of artists' residencies to encourage visual artists, writers and other creative individuals to explore and develop their artistic work. Financed by the architectural practice of Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn. the residencies range from all-inclusive sponsorship of allowance, materials, accommodation, studios and final exhibitions to more limited residences providing accommodation and studios only.


Rimbun Dahan run four artist residency programs for different genres and nationalities:

  • Visual Arts Residnecies: for visual artists or visual arts curators from Australia and ASEAN nations only (Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos & Vietnam), for residencies of 3-6 months. Providing accommodation and studio space, as well as for ASEAN artists living allowance and airfare. Applications rolling.
  • Choreographer's Residency: for contemporary dance choreographers or dance programmers, for residencies of 1-3 months. Providing accommodation, dance studio space and limited production assistance. Exact terms on a case-by-case basis. Applications rolling.
  • Open Residencies for International Artists: for non-ASEAN/Australian artists. Providing accommodation and work space for RM4,000 a month, for any length of residency, with access to all Rimbun Dahan community facilities. Applications rolling.
  • Residencies at Hotel Penang: for visual artists from Australia or ASEAN nations only, for residencies of 1-3 months, at the luxury boutique Hotel Penaga in George Town, Penang. Providing accommodation, studio space, breakfast and living allowance. Applications rolling.
Outcome

For Residencies at Hotel Penaga program, artists are expected to:

  • Actively produce work;
  • Host open studio evenings several times a week to interact with hotel guests and develop a broader appreciation of the artist’s practice;
  • Contribute at least one work created during the course of the residency to the permanent collection of Hotel Penaga.

Rimbun Dahan has a number of different styles of accommodation which is provided to artists according to their specific needs and availability: studio apartments, cottage, guest rooms, a century-old wooden Malay house, Rumah Uda Manap. Location

Rimbun Dahan is accessible by the KTM Komuter network on the Rawang line. The Sungai Buloh station, where taxis are available, is about 12 minutes away.
