Rimbun Dahan
Set on fourteen acres outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the compound of Rimbun Dahan is a centre for developing traditional and contemporary art forms. It runs a range of artists' residencies to encourage visual artists, writers and other creative individuals to explore and develop their artistic work. Financed by the architectural practice of Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn. the residencies range from all-inclusive sponsorship of allowance, materials, accommodation, studios and final exhibitions to more limited residences providing accommodation and studios only.
Rimbun Dahan run four artist residency programs for different genres and nationalities:
- Visual Arts Residnecies: for visual artists or visual arts curators from Australia and ASEAN nations only (Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos & Vietnam), for residencies of 3-6 months. Providing accommodation and studio space, as well as for ASEAN artists living allowance and airfare. Applications rolling.
- Choreographer's Residency: for contemporary dance choreographers or dance programmers, for residencies of 1-3 months. Providing accommodation, dance studio space and limited production assistance. Exact terms on a case-by-case basis. Applications rolling.
- Open Residencies for International Artists: for non-ASEAN/Australian artists. Providing accommodation and work space for RM4,000 a month, for any length of residency, with access to all Rimbun Dahan community facilities. Applications rolling.
- Residencies at Hotel Penang: for visual artists from Australia or ASEAN nations only, for residencies of 1-3 months, at the luxury boutique Hotel Penaga in George Town, Penang. Providing accommodation, studio space, breakfast and living allowance. Applications rolling.
For Residencies at Hotel Penaga program, artists are expected to:
- Actively produce work;
- Host open studio evenings several times a week to interact with hotel guests and develop a broader appreciation of the artist’s practice;
- Contribute at least one work created during the course of the residency to the permanent collection of Hotel Penaga.

Rimbun Dahan has a number of different styles of accommodation which is provided to artists according to their specific needs and availability: studio apartments, cottage, guest rooms, a century-old wooden Malay house, Rumah Uda Manap. Rimbun Dahan is accessible by the KTM Komuter network on the Rawang line. The Sungai Buloh station, where taxis are available, is about 12 minutes away.
