Headquartered in Pickens, South Carolina (USA), the Rensing Center seeks to foster creative capability and individual renewal. In 2014, the Rensing Center expanded to include a residency program in Borseda, Italy, which provides living and work space to self-motivated applicants looking for an isolated, rural retreat to work on independent projects.
The Rensing Center’s Borseda Program offers residencies of three weeks to three months from May through October for professional artists, writers, and ecologists. Residents are provided with living and work space and encouraged to learn about the traditions of Liguria, in the mountains of Northern Italy, the home of the Slow Food movement. Applicants should be self-reliant artists and nature lovers looking for a secluded community in which to work on independent projects.
This village has an ancient wisdom and an aging population of Italians with a twinkle in their eye. What it needs are enthusiastic visitors with a passion for preserving traditions, learning about cultures, and walking lightly with nature. They do not require the resident to complete a specific project, but they do expect from the residents to contribute to their blog and share their experiences with the staff.
Their historic 1816 stone apartment has been restored to include a fully equipped kitchen and modern bathroom. It comfortably sleeps two in the queen bed and a foldout sofa in the living room sleeps two more.
There is no separate studio space; it is a relatively small apartment, but has a generous covered terrace that can be used for art-making.
Borseda is a small, remote village in the mountains of Liguria. Nearby is the Italian Riviera, including the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
