Paid by host:

Platform China provides all the necessary support to make artists' time in China fruitful and enjoyable. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from relevant organizations and letters of support can be provided to this end.

Paid by artist:

Participants are required to cover the costs of living, travel, accommodation and studio, and the costs of individual special programs chosen if so. The cost for a studio is 8500 RMB (around 1072 euro) per month and not includes special programs.

For basic day-to-day living expenses (food and transport) are about 300 - 400 euros per month. Please also add more budget for assistant, interpreter or potential fees for your own working plan during your stay in China.

Application guidelines:

Visual or performing artists, critics and curators of contemporary art are top-priority for this program. BIAP is interested in emerging, mid-career and established artists. Artists are selected based on the quality of their work and their interest in working in Beijing. They also accept applications from writers, researchers, editors and academics from around the world who are interested of contemporary art in China.

Description

As Platform China is in the first place an open platform, every proposal for a residency will be taken into consideration. The aim of BIAP is to establish an artistic and cultural window through which international artists can begin to gain a deeper understanding of China and to develop communication with Chinese artists. BIAP provide artists, curators, writers, designers, researchers and academics with an opportunity to live and work in China.

Outcome

Possibility to have an exhibition at BIAP gallery during or by the end of the Artist Residency, it is free of charge (not including the material and Promotion).Also BIAP Gallery has related with other galleries in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Wuhan, Shenyang, Staff at BIAP is willing to help contact other potential exhibition venues for the participant during their time in Beijing.

*Please provide your exhibition proposal beforehand to Platform China, as they have also their own programs and the programs for the space always to be arranged few months beforehand.

Studio Information

BIAP has set up five studios (50-70 sqm) until now. Both located in the very important art districts in Beijing:

  • East End Art district A: two fully equipped artist studios located in a newly emerging artistic community.
  • East End Art district C: three studios located in the emerging area of art galleries and studios.

 

Accommodation Information

Private and fully furnitures studios with private bathroom, electricity, water, heating, cleaning(weekly) and internet. The host also provides one bicycle for each studio.

*Note: Studios are not suitable for young children. Each studio is designed for one person to stay. We do not provide additional facilities and stuff if you want to stay for more than one person. Each studio can not stay for more than 2 people. At some times, facilities may be not available at short notice.

Location

Beijing is a city in motion, and its emerging contemporary art scene consequently shares that characteristic. Platform China located in Caochangdi Village, an urban village and renowned arts district located in the Chaoyang District of northeast Beijing at the intersection of the 5th Ring Road and Airport Expressway.
