The current base rental rate for Penland resident artists is $175 per month for unfurnished housing and studio space. With considerable seasonal variation, utilities costs per resident for studio and housing currently average $150-$200 per month. Also, application fee of $25.

Application guidelines:

The Resident Program welcomes self-motivated, directed people working in traditional and non-traditional studio crafts. Past experience has shown that the Resident Program works best if participants have prior experience at Penland. If you have had no connection with Penland, please let them know of your interest in the Resident Program and plan to spend some time here in another capacity.

Penland's mission is to promote individual and artistic growth in crafts by providing programs and facilities that serve a full range of crafts endeavors. These intensive learning experiences are enhanced by the wide range of ages, nationalities, professions and backgrounds of our students. Penland is also an information resource centre for historical and contemporary crafts. Known as an international leader in the fields of crafts, Penland routinely provides assistance for research and exhibitions. The gallery, visitor canter and outreach programs serve a varied audience by providing educational opportunities for the interested general public, educators, collectors and school students.

Studio Information

Most of the resident artist studios are housed in a converted dairy barn at the edge of the campus. Apartments are located adjacent to the studio complex or within a 5-minute walking distance.

Penland School of Crafts is located in Mitchell County, North Carolina, 52 miles north of Asheville, near the town of Spruce Pine. The area is rural, isolated, and mountainous.
