Four weeks free access to the glass workshop, basic materials, accommodation, small (extra) material budget and stipend of £300 to assist with travel and living expenses.
There are no cost when the residency is part of NLCG programmes. However, artists can also spend time at NLCG at other times but have to cover all costs themselves (accommodation, use of workshops, materials, subsistence, travel, etc).
North Lands was born in the nineties out of a need to create a centre of excellence to stimulate the growing interest in the possibilities of glass as an art form. The residency is open both to glass artists and to painters, sculptors, architects and designers wishing to explore the technical and artistic potential of glass either on its own or in combination with other materials. Through its programme of summer master classes, its annual conference and its residencies, North Lands aims to stimulate a lively exchange of ideas whilst also allowing time for reflection and action in a professional environment.
Each resident is required to donate one piece for inclusion in the collection. Additionally, an open studio event will be organised during the residency, and each artist is required to provide a short report on their experiences during the residency and photographic evidence of their time spent at NLCG.
A four-bedroom house or four-bedroom flat is provided free of charge as part of the residency. The four residents, however, will be jointly responsible for covering the cost of domestic utilities that are used during their residency; this will be calculated on a weekly basis at the actual cost charged to North Lands.
Facilities include general purpose/drawing room, kiln room, cold working facilities and all related tools and equipment. NLCG’s Studio technical manager is predominantly responsible for the safe running and maintenance of the workshops. While he will be available to give advice on equipment usage and technical support, he is not a technical assistant for residents.
