Paid by host:

Free accommodation with ample live/work spaces that includes a bedroom with private bathroom, living areas and kitchen facilities. This will include an onsite studio space with both indoor and outdoor work areas. Artists will have access to free wifi internet. If the artists wishes to present their project to the public, they have the option of an open studio, exhibition or performance within the space. The electricity and water bills are paid for by the host.

Paid by artist:

Selected artists pay a monthly participation fee of $650 USD. Artists are responsible for their own travel,living and material expenses. The residency can provide selected artists with an official letter of invitation to help with the search for financial support.

If the artist proposes a joint residency with another artistic collaborator in their project, there exists the possibility of sharing a bedroom space, in this case each artist would pay a reduced fee of $425 USD each for their one month stay.

mid:puente:mex is an newly launched artist-in-residence program geared towards international multidisciplinary artists and art professionals who want to explore and develop their ideas, artistic practice and projects in Mexico.

mid:puente:mex residency aims:

  • to act as a < 2 > way bridge linking Merida Mexico with the international contemporary art world.
  • to create a communication among artists, curators, cultural centers, art organizations, and the international cultural community,
  • to provide a platform where multidisciplinary art forms can be created, expressed, and presented within the historic centro of Merida Mexico,
Outcome

The artist will have the option to present their work to the local cultural community.

This can take the form of:

  • Open studio, exhibition or performance in residency space
  • Public art installation/intervention 
  • Presentation at the local art school or cultural center
  • Exhibition at local gallery or museum
Studio Information

Several multi-use studio spaces, both indoor and outdoor provide flexible work spaces. In addition, there are outside garden areas, multi-level roof terraces which can be accessed and utilized. There are work-sinks in studio spaces. Also tables, and wall and floor space to work on. The artist will be living and working onsite within the same property

Technical Information

Residency hosted within remodeled historic properties, many rooms have 4.5 meter high ceilings that can be used as studio and/or exhibition space. There is access to the internet. Plus a dvd player,video projector, microphone, mixing board, and speakers. Both indoor and outdoor work space is provided:

  • multi-level roof terrace space
  • Simple gallery track lighting in place with dimmer switch
Location

Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan located in the southeastern part of Mexico. A bustling, eclectic tropical city with a population of approximately 1 million inhabitants. The artist residency is located within the santa ana neighborhood of historic center of the city. Nearby sites include ancient mayan ruins, haciendas, cenotes (natural fresh water pools), gulf coast & caribean beaches, museums, markets. It is easy to walk or bus everywhere from the residency location.

The resident artists are within a few steps walking to the Paseo Montejo Avenue, the most important cultural sites are within easy walking distance- museums, markets, parks, plazas, cathedral, main plaza, cultural centers-along with banks, grocery stores, cafes, 24 hour convenience stores, restaurants all located nearby.
