Description

Makers Circle is a non-profit art center that provides support to emerging and professional photographers and makers. Makers Circle not only holds dear the values of creative and collaborative culture, they model these values every day while offering an inspiring and grounding ‘place’ for makers at all stages of their creative process.
Whether you are just venturing into your creative life, discovering a new or deeper direction for your work, looking for a place to explore and play, or seeking professional development, Makers Circle will meet you right where you are by offering individualized studio, retreat and residency programs that range from completely independent to fully facilitated. Makers at all skill levels and experience are welcome to apply. Opportunities to muse, consult or collaborate with other artists in our larger community are often available.
Makers Circle was originally founded in response to the lack of residency programs available for photographers who practice traditional, alternative, and silver processes. The residency has a number of different darkrooms as well as a digital studio that includes large format printers that print on both paper and fabric. Since recently the residency program is expanded to include other art media including painting, mixed-media, fiber-art, and others.

Outcome

Artists are expected to focus on their craft a minimum of 4 hours per day. Each artist is invited to speak to the community about their personal work and to do one skillshare workshop (minimum 2 hours).

Studio Information

Makers Circle has a number of flexible-space studios that they adapt (to the best of their ability) to the needs of each visiting maker. Before scheduling a retreat or residency, the organizers gather important information about your creative process and the best ways to support you as a maker. If they don't have the studio space, equipment or resources you need, they can often secure nearby working space at studios in the wider community. Please see the studio list for further information.

Accommodation Information

You are provided a private room in an old farmhouse. The rooms are comfortable and linens afre provided. You will have access to a shared kitchen and bathroom as well as your assigned studio(s). Resident artists provide their own food. The organizers do stock basic staples such as rice, beans, oatmeal, cooking oil, herbs, tea, sugar, etc.

Technical Information

The digital studio is their most versatile studio and often an important resource for artists of all mediums. It includes large format printers, scanners, copy stands, adjustable height work tables, paper trimmers, etc. They also have an extensive library and bountiful art collection.

Location

Makers Circle is a rural residency center located in the Southern Appalachian region of the United States, about 25 minutes from Asheville, North Carolina. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Makers Circle is a visually inspiring place to practice your craft. Nearby towns and farms offer a connection to local culture while numerous national and state parks provide opportunities to explore beautiful wilderness areas.
