Description

laberinto projects is an arts, education and cultural legacy preservation platform that fosters contemporary art practices, social inclusion and dialogue in El Salvador and its diaspora. laberinto projects serves as a catalyst to memory and identity in the construction of individual and collective histories. They provide a framework for cultural studies through an ever-developing conceptual archive that connects past and present, digital and physical and transnational divides. At the core of the archive is the history of galería el laberinto and the country’s most significant collection of art produced during the civil war and post-war period. laberinto projects will actualize over time through a layered and inclusive process that breaks down the hierarchical structures that limit the access, collection and distribution of knowledge.

Laberinto projects has two main residencies: master artist workshop and optional residency programs, which bring in master artists from around the world, and the self-directed residencies, which are small, selected groups of creatives who prefer a more unstructured stay.

Master artist workshops

The master artist residencies are an alternative environment for unconventional explorations and programs that invite artists, scholars, writers and other experts in their fields to give a one-week workshop aimed at both nurturing and stimulating the participants' existing practices. At this time, workshop participants are carefully selected based on the quality of artists' work, the impact this residency will have, and potential synergies with other residents.

The workshop lasts one week; however, all participants are invited to live and work for the entire month, though it is not mandatory. Laberinto Institute provides opportunities for established and emerging artists alike. They run each program with 6-8 residents. The residency fee includes shared housing at its unique site overlooking Lake Coatepeque, and daily lunches. Artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply for admission. They welcome collaborative applicants-- if you are applying as a group you may submit one application. A working knowledge of English or Spanish is helpful.

Self-directed residency

The self-directed residencies usher a more independent time. This residency is perfect for those who seek more solitude in their days, the time, space and clarity to create, but who also want a supportive and creative group for inspiration and informal critique. These residencies encourage a blend of writers, scholars, poets, musicians, actors, directors, artists and other creatives to come together for individual discovery and communal exchanges. At this time, residency participants are carefully selected based on the quality of artists' work, the impact this residency will have and potential synergies with other residents.
