Summer Residency: June 20 - July 30, 2016
Grin City Collective is an artist residency, a social practice art collaboration and a working farm all rolled into one program. Built on a belief in interdisciplinary dialogue, Grin City brings together people from all walks of life to foster new types of creative thinking and social commitment. It transforms the traditional institution of "retreat" residencies. It transforms the way artists and social organizers approach creative ideas. It transforms the community.
This summer and fall, Grin City Collective brings together artists, writers, scientists and educators for a special 2-part collaborative residency that uses innovation and design to build creative, interactive projects exploring the ways we interact with our world. Culture Lab will be Grin City's first themed residency as well as its first regular session Summer Residency.
Residents live in 2 100-year-old farm houses equipped with communal kitchen and bath. There are four bathrooms, three showers, and two kitchens available for use. Up to 10 artists can live at Grin City at one time.
Artists receive individual studio space and access to communal workshops. Studios are most accommodating to writers, visual artists or musicians, but the campus includes a number of multi-use auxiliary spaces for dance.
Available facilities include: makerspace, ceramics kiln and wheels, wood shop, basic metals shop.
Grin City is located on a 320-acre farm in east-central Iowa about a mile north of the town of Grinnell. The half-acre garden provides produce for resident meals June through October.
