The cost depends of the duration of the residency, please contact them for further information. Artist are encouraged to seek funding from relevant organizations in their own country. Once accepted, Grabart will provide letters of support to assist with grant applications.

3. One-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it.
4. Artists must submit 5 samples of work, in case the artist have a website please also provide the link.
5. Desired period of residence (1, 2 or 3 months).
6. Do you need help for find hosting in Barcelona? If yes, are you thinking to rent a room or a private appartment?

Grabart is located in Barcelona in one of the oldest engraving installations of its kind in Spain. With its' spaces located at the historical catalan workshop of the founder Joan Barbarà (Barcelona, 1927-2013) it is not only an essential part of the art scene since its founding in 1950, but way beyond the city's limits, it is also internationally recognised as an innovative, where the most important artists of the current and the last century chosen this place for creating his artworks. The founder Joan Barbarà is one of the world’s most respected engravers and one of the best printmakers of this century.

Currently, his family continues with the work in the workshop where internationall artists come to work. This is where the Barbarà family has been preserving and sharing the legacy of their grandfather for decades, and where GRABART is offering artists the chance to learn unique printmaking and painting techniques and show the work produced at the residence at an international art fair. Grabart is a project born of the spirit of opening doors and bringing knowledge to artists who wish to explore new techniques.

The selected artists will work at the Joan Barbarà workshop for a period from one week to 3 months. Resident artists have access to the workshop from Monday to Friday, from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm. They offer the support and advice of an engraving instructor.

Outcome

Artist residence studio workshop in Barcelona, provided by the legendary art print studio founded in 1945 by Joan Barbarà. This is one of the most important and historic workshops of Europe that hosted masters artists such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Joseph Beuys, Victor Vasarely, Salvador Dalí, Antoni Tàpies, and contemporary artists like Jaume Plensa.

Technical Information

Techniques that can be used
Direct techniques - Sharp or sharp tools are used, such as:

  • Burin
  • Drypoint and all its variants of engraving
  • Mezzotint
  • Carborundum
  • Gravure
  • Oil slick

Indirect techniques - Acids are used to create the plate as:

  • Aquatint
  • Sugar engraving
  • Hard Varnish
  • Photo-etching (for photo-etching not included in the price are: photolites, emulsion for the photography in the plate, plates of metratch, copper, zinc, semi-hard copper and aluminum)
  • Painting

(Many of the techniques can be mixed)
