The Fresh Milk Art Platform Inc.

Description

The Fresh Milk Art Platform Inc. is a Caribbean non-profit, artist-led, inter-disciplinary organization that supports creatives and promotes smart social, economic, and environmental stewardship through creative engagement with society and by cultivating excellence in the arts. The idea for Fresh Milk developed over years of conversations with other practicing artists around the need for artistic engagement amongst contemporary practitioners living and working in Barbados, with an expressed need to strengthen links with the region and the diaspora. The platform transforms into a gathering space for contemporary creatives who are thirsty to debate ideas and share works through residencies, lectures, screenings, workshops, exhibitions, projects etc. Fresh Milk has the capacity to accommodate two artists at the same time. Residents have the space to write and make small works in their living space and also have use of the nearby Milking Parlour Studio which is located seven minutes walk away from the residence. Access to the public transportation system, which has a standard rate of $1.00 US per journey, is a ten to fifteen minute walk away. Weekly car trips to the supermarket are available on request.  Creatives can produce work individually or collaborate during the residency, as well as interface with contemporary practitioners living and working in Barbados.

Accommodation Information

The residency house has a maximum capacity of 2 artists, who will each have their own bedroom but share a kitchen, general living area and bathroom. Linens and towels are provided, and laundry facilities are available. Please see Fresh Milk's website for more information on the living facilities and house guidelines.

Studio Information
  • A 15.5 x 12.5 ft studio space.
  • A wide expanse of rural land.
  • Access to the Colleen Lewis Reading Room on site; the library index can be viewed here.
Technical Information

Fresh Milk will provide wireless internet access and lend technical support where possible, but artists should supply their own materials and tools, and be prepared to function independently. Fresh Milk is happy to connect resident artists with a large a varied network of dynamic local creatives, and support collaboration.

Location

Rurally located in St. George, Barbados in the Southern Caribbean, and was founded by visual artist and creative activist Annalee Davis. The Milking Parlour Studio is beautifully situated under a grove of mahogany trees in the middle of a working, hundred acre dairy farm, and as such has the capacity to accommodate artists working outdoors on temporary site specific works. The studio is linked to Fresh Milk’s director’s home which she shares with her two children.
