The program attracts the broadest conceivable range of arts practices, related disciplines and nationalities. All visiting artists need to provide food, transport and art materials for themselves and are expected to leave the studios clean and tidy.
The large two story Federation Arts & Craft Pise constructed Butter Factory built in 1918 is listed with the National Trust and Heritage Victoria. It accommodates an exhibition space, a residence and three residential studios for visiting artists. Cowwarr is a small village on the Traralgon - Maffra Road on the rich river flats of the Thomson River that flows from the Gippsland High Country to join the Gippsland river systems of the Macalister and the Latrobe that ultimately form part of the Gippsland Lakes. There are plenty of opportunities for bike riding and walking as we are next to the rail trail and a short stroll from the Rainbow Creek. It is a great staging place for exploring the rest of Gippsland.
Public transport train travel between Melbourne and Traralgon every hour most days. (Limited bus connections to Cowwarr use Traralgon as the destination for more travel options) We can meet train connections in the Art Space van when prearranged. Shopping/provisioning trips can also be arranged.
