Branscombe House 2019 Artist Residency

Description 

The City of Richmond Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage invites professional, community-engaged artists working to submit proposals for an 11-month live-in residency located on Canada’s west coast, in Richmond, B.C. They are seeking proposals for interesting new projects and programs that promote meaningful community engagement through artistic opportunities. Artists passionate about working with diverse communities are especially encouraged to apply. All disciplines accepted, including writers, composers, visual artists, musicians, theatre artists, video, multi-disciplinary, social practice and performance artists.

Branscombe House is a beautifully restored Edwardian style house located in the residential area of historic Steveston in Richmond. The self-contained two-bedroom artists’ suite upstairs is offered as an artist residence/studio with rent 100% subsidized in exchange for ~ 22 hours/month (240 hours total) of hands-on community engagement. The City will also provide in-kind marketing support, as well as facility/production support associated with public programs (including access to free use of cultural and performance spaces; basic workshop materials, print production, tech support, etc.) as negotiated and provide up to $1500 in materials reimbursement.

Outcome 

240 hours of public engagement, community workshops, exhibitions, and anything else that the artist is interested in pursuing.

Accommodation Information 

A self-contained, 2-bedroom suite with full kitchen, living room and bathroom (washer only, no dryer). This private space will be the live/work home of the Branscombe House artists in residence.

Branscombe House is a recently restored Edwardian style structure located at 4900 Steveston Hwy at a prominent intersection in the residential area of Steveston. It is located across the street from O’Hare’s Pub and is a 20-min. walk or three-min. drive to Steveston Village.

Studio Information 

Downstairs is a meeting/reception space with washroom and catering kitchen available for public and private events on a rental basis. This space will be managed by the Rentals Office. Both upstairs and downstairs spaces share wireless internet and a common foyer entrance. The artist resident and rental clients will both be expected to be respectful re: sound issues. Musicians will not play amplified music.

Technical Information 

The exterior of the house includes a shed veranda, front landscape with trees and small parking area with public washroom at the back. The house is situated on a bus route and a major, recently built greenway bicycle/pedestrian route along a former railway corridor. There are plans for a community garden in the immediate vicinity as well.

Proposals may include temporary installations, exhibitions and events inside and/or on the property.
