The Center of Art and Nature (CAN) of Farrera is a residence programme for artists and researchers from all over the world. Placed in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees, in Pallars Sobirà, the village of Farrera (25 inhabitants at 1360 m) has a privileged and calm environment for reflection, inspiration and creativity. The residence is mainly addressed to artists with a special interest in nature, geologists, botanists, geographers, historians, anthropologists and other experts in the areas of social and natural science.
The Centre for Art and Nature is the perfect place to sort ideas, read, and be able to know what you want to do, write or paint. Isolated up the mountain the resident does not have to worry about anything but being able to do what he wants to do. The CAN takes care of everything. For minimum stays of one month creative advisory services are offered that allow the resident to make the most of their stay.
Separate from studio. Simple, comfortable individual and double rooms.
The CAN mainly has two different spaces of residence: the Studio and the annex of La Bastida. The Studio is the former apartment of the teacher when in Farrera there was a school (it was closed in 1964), rehabilitated in 1994. The annex of La Bastida is the only new space (built on the ruins of an old haystack). Exceptionally we also have Casa Ramon which is an old family house that preserves the traditional structure with wooden walls. The residential spaces are equipped with all the utensils you may need for a pleasant stay (kitchen, bathroom, various utensils).
If it has not been arranged otherwise, residents must supply the food for breakfast and lunch. The CAN offers a daily dinner - except Sundays - in the community dining room of La Bastida (9pm, 8pm in winter), the only timetable to be respected within the free pace of work of each one. Bed linen is changed weekly from the CAN.
There are three production spaces and one research space in the village. The studios are light-filled work spaces with running water and electricity. Painting workshop of 50 m2 with running water, very good natural light and electricity. Multipurpose workshop of 60 m2 with exit to the patio. Research space equipped with an iMac computer, local cartography, and a library specialized in mountain studies, landscape, nature, art and poetry. Wi-fi connection is available from all the facilities.
Available materials at the studio spaces:
The village of Farrera is located in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees situated on an south-facing bluff at 1365 metres of altitude. As one of the highest inhabited villages in Catalonia, its views are of the surrounding mountains breathtaking. The mountains beyond are rugged and wild, with native pine and birch forest covering the lower slopes and high, bare peaks above soaring into blue southern skies. All kinds of rare animals are found here, including wild boar, chamois, black woodpeckers, golden eagles, capercaillies and vultures.
