ATLAS is an itinerant arts organisation that celebrates and explores the specificity of place within a local, national and international context. An organisation ‘without walls’, we create support structures with artists and communities through process-based commissions, social and political actions, exhibitions, exchanges, residencies, workshops, educational programmes and projects that strongly connect to local knowledge.
ATLAS works across Skye and Lochalsh in different spaces and venues, working in collaboration with community organisations, local activists, schools, growers, artists, makers and other groups. ATLAS often focuses on projects that address climate injustice in relation to local history, culture and knowledge, and on art projects that span long periods of time – connecting the conditions and desires of the local area with the shared concerns of global communities.
Resources and media such as libraries, independent publishing, film, performance, archives and food constitute the thematic framwork of ATLAS. In recent years their programme has involved community filmmaking, Gaelic learning collaborations, walks, screenings, meals, local apprenticeship programmes, environmental research projects, exhibitions and zine libraries – working with national and international artists and local groups alike.
⚠️ATLAS Arts’ office in Portree is currently closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The staff works remotely and their projects are continuing in different ways.
ATLAS Arts is an arts organisation working across the Isles of Skye and Raasay, and the surrounding area of Lochalsh – on the north-west coast of Scotland. ATLAS’ fixed gathering spaces are office and public workshop space in Portree, and The CLIMAVORE Oyster Table on the tidal zone at Bayfield, Portree.
